Meet Sunny Chen
Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sunny Chen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
I knew then that this was a worthwhile endeavor, not only because hygiene poverty is overlooked, but because it is so solvable. While other organizations address basic needs, the focus on hygiene—a foundation of health—was largely missing. ReSoap was born out of the need to fill this gap in a sustainable, impactful way. My excitement stemmed from both the practical logic and the vision: we could provide immediate relief through hygiene products, and at the same time educate communities, build awareness, and promote environmental solutions. The process hasn’t just been about distributing hygiene items; it’s been about providing the dignity and confidence people deserve, about empowering individuals with tools and knowledge.

What began as a local effort to address a specific need has now evolved into a national initiative. ReSoap Foundation was created to fight both hygiene poverty and climate change, and to date, we’ve donated over five thousand hygiene items to organizations across Florida, New Jersey, Texas, and more. One of our proudest moments was organizing a Dental Kit Packaging Event at my high school, where we assembled dental kits and sent them to underprivileged schools in Chicago. These kits not only provided essential hygiene products but also helped educators teach children about the importance of oral hygiene and gave them the tools to smile confidently.

Meet Sunny Chen | Non-Profit Organization Founder & CEO
We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunny Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Reflecting on my journey with ReSoap Foundation, the most important lesson I’ve learned is the incredible strength found in resilience. When I embarked on this mission as a high school student with limited experience, the challenges of launching a nonprofit were daunting. There were moments when the weight of it all felt overwhelming. I recall numerous times when plans unraveled—events that didn’t materialize, initiatives that struggled to gain momentum, and phases when progress seemed agonizingly slow.

My purpose in the world to make a meaningful difference. It all started when I witnessed firsthand the aftermath of a disaster—one that shattered communities and disrupted lives—the devastating flash floods in central Appalachia in 2022. I joined efforts to help my community organize a Christmas drive for those affected, but one moment, in particular, struck me deeply. A young boy didn’t ask for toys or gadgets like many other children might have. Instead, he asked for basic necessities—undergarments and sanitary products.

Her heart broke as she listed “menstrual pads” under “Christmas Wish List.” Following the 2022 flash floods in central Appalachia, Sunny Chen’s community ran a Christmas drive. Hearing victims request sanitary products and seeing the disaster the floods left behind, the then 15-year-old started ReSoap Foundation, a nonprofit organization that fights hygiene poverty and climate change.
The organization offers the opportunity for people of all ages and locations to become ReSoap ambassadors. Depending on their interests and availability, ambassadors can participate in various projects:
